The AI Revolution in Canadian Education: Navigating Uncertainty and Shaping the Future

The upcoming academic year in Canada is not just about new courses and lectures; it's a pivotal moment as we grapple with the transformative power of AI in education. This shift is not unique to Canada, but our nation's AI strategy adds a distinct layer of complexity and opportunity.

As an academic and researcher, I've delved into the impact of AI on higher education, particularly in Canadian universities, through a case study with my colleague Emily Ballantyne from Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU). Our focus was on understanding how faculty members navigate the AI landscape and the policies that guide its use.

The Faculty's Dilemma

The challenge for faculty members is twofold: embracing the potential of AI while ensuring its responsible integration. In our study, we found that faculty members are cautious but not resistant to AI. They recognize the benefits, such as expedited feedback and innovative learning methods, but also express concerns about academic integrity, workload, and the lack of clear guidelines.

The current state of AI policy in higher education is a mixed bag. Some institutions impose restrictions and academic integrity rules, while others encourage responsible experimentation. However, there's a glaring need for consistent guidance. Faculty members are often left to interpret broad principles, leading to confusion and inconsistency in AI integration across courses.

Trust and Relationships at the Core

AI's influence on education extends beyond technology; it reshapes the social and emotional dynamics between students and educators. The trust that underpins deep learning is now being tested. As one faculty member aptly put it, they feel like a detective rather than a teacher, which is a stark departure from the ideal educational environment.

To address this, we propose the CARE Framework, which stands for Critical AI Literacy, Accountable Governance, Relational-Affective Pedagogy, and Ethical Orientation. This framework emphasizes the importance of supporting educators in making meaningful learning experiences, ensuring fair and transparent governance, recognizing the emotional labor involved, and grounding decisions in ethical principles.

Practical Steps for Universities

Universities have a crucial role in implementing these principles. Firstly, they must acknowledge and support the increased workload of faculty members as they adapt to AI. This includes providing resources for assignment redesign, AI rule clarification, and student support.

Secondly, universities should foster trust by promoting shared AI agreements between students and faculty at the beginning of each course. These agreements clarify AI expectations and emphasize the importance of critical thinking and learning objectives.

Lastly, structured professional learning is essential. Educators, students, and teacher candidates need opportunities to understand AI, evaluate tools, and make informed decisions. Teacher education programs should be at the forefront of this, ensuring future teachers are equipped to handle AI-related challenges before they enter the classroom.

The Broader Impact on Canada's AI Strategy

Canada's AI strategy is not just about technology; it's about people and relationships. The success of this strategy will depend on how well we prepare and support our educators. AI literacy should be seamlessly integrated into teacher training, enabling them to plan, teach, assess, and reflect with AI in mind. Without this relational and practical approach, Canada's AI literacy goals may remain elusive.

At MSVU's Faculty of Education, we're taking action based on our study's findings. We're developing evidence-based methods to assist educators in making informed decisions about AI literacy and its application in the classroom. This is a step towards responsible AI policy and practice in higher education, ensuring that we not only embrace the potential of AI but also navigate its challenges with care and foresight.
